- NOTES from a SATISFIED USER
- ---------------------------
-
- STATA has been in everyday use with my organization since version 1.3 or
- slightly more than 2 1/2 years. COMPUTING RESOURCE CENTER, the author, has
- the best technical support I have ever come across. The software is extremely
- flexible in use. STATA is is a quality product and functions with very good
- speed for its software category. The program can be used interactively or in
- batch mode and is primarily command-line oriented.
-
- For those who don't like the command-line, try the MENU. Just type `menu' at
- the STATA prompt ( which is a dot as in DBASE) .
-
- Our primary use of this software is as a numerical database, but if you examine
- the software you will find that the ability to handle strings is sophisticated.
- We use STATA to organize, store and analyze data from a datalogger. It is also
- use to out-file data to other packages (although that is not one of its stronger
- features). Interactively, you can input data, tell STATA what it is, and begin
- to analyze.
-
- A current project is creating a system for a corporate division's QC departments
- which will handle data input, storage, and immediate and period output done com-
- pletely with the STATA environment. This includes menu systems, graphics and
- statistics. BTW, the graphics are very good.
-
- If you are on the EXEC-PC BBS, you may feel free to ask questions. I'll try to
- answer if my time permits. Be warned, I am not the complete expert. I'm learn-
- ing all the time.

-
- Included amoung all the other materials are a set of demonstration diskettes--
- they are the three diskettes in a single sleeve with the diskette-sized blue
- card. We normally charge $20 for our demonstration system, but if you know
- of anyone who might be interested in STATA, we request you give them to him or
- her. If you know of more than one person, you may copy the diskettes or call
- us; we will gladly provide you with extra copies.
-
- If your friends would like a copy of the STATA Reference Manual Sampler, the
- 63 most important pages of the Reference Manual, please ask them to call us.
- We will send the SAMPLER at no charge.
-
- We can also provide STATA brochures if you need them.

-
- STATA (tm) Demonstration Diskettes
-
- (The following is adapted from a short note shipped with this product.)
-
- There are 3 archived files, "STATA1.ARC", "STATA2.ARC", and "STATA3.ARC",
- in the STATA 2.0 demonstration set. These files, once they are unarchived,
- will let you try STATA if your machine has a hard disk. Although you do not
- need a hard disk to use the professional version of STATA, the demonstration
- version requires it since you do not have the 800-page Reference Manual and
- therefore need the help and tutorial files on-line.
-
- Your computer does not have to have graphics capabilities, but if it does,
- you will be able to try STATA's graphics, too. By graphic capabilities, we
- mean that your computer has a Color Graphics Adapter, and Extended Graphics
- Adapter, a Video Graphics Array, or a Hercules card.
-
- To install the files, create a directory named STATA by typing `MD \STATA'.
- Move to this new directory by typing `CD \STATA'. Copy the files from STATA.ARC
- to this directory with the DOS COPY command. After the first archive is copied,
- copy the files from STATA1.ARC to this directory. Finally copy the files from
- STATA2.ARC to this directory.
-
- ===> Type `DEMO' and press the RETURN key to start the demonstration.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ===> You exit from STATA back to DOS by typing `exit, clear'. You must type
- this phrase in lower case. All STATA commands are ALWAYS in lower case.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- You can remove the demonstration materials from your disk by typing `ERASE
- \STATA', answering the DOS verification question with `Y', and then typing `RD
- \STATA'.
